Info and Rules

what is the aviary?

The aviary is a multi-fandom challenge community run all year round. There will be weekly games, graphics and writing challenges as well as longer challenges such as festivals and video challenges. You choose what you would like to do, and enter at any time!

what sort of deadlines do you have

1. Weekly Challenges ; each week a few challenges will be run based on a weekly schedule, you can submit any time during the week and challenges will be closed after the week-long due date.

2. Longer Challenges ; running from anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months, longer challenges can be entered anytime during the open period. They will have a closing date, but you can enter as many times as you like during the open period, according to each individual challenges rules.

what sort of challenges do you have

Short fic, long fic, icons, graphics, drawing, videos, gifs, wordsearches, math puzzles, trivia, ANYTHING I CAN THINK OF. You can also suggest a challenge if you'd like to!

do i have to join a nest?

no. you do not have to join a nest. if you would like to do your challenges individually that is ok! you can have your points earned on an idividual basis, or if you'd like you don't even have to get points. You can come and go as you please and enter whatever you like if you aren't in a nest.

what fandoms are welcome?

any, all, and none. tv, fiction, movies, comics, original fiction and stock are all fine. the only restriction is that set out in the challenges, and some may be more suited to fandom than original works. whatever you like to do!

what is a nest?

There are three nests, [the birds of prey, flightless birds & song birds] and this gives this challenge comm a little boost as far as getting challenges done - if you join a nest, you will have your own community for social activities, reminders, etc and your points will go towards the nest tally. Every month we'll have a winning nest. To make this fair, the nests have to have an even (or almost even) number of people involved, so you may not always be able to choose your nest. If you don't participate at least once a month, you will be removed from your nest, BUT not from the comm - you can continue to participate outside a nest OR rejoin the nest when you have more time.

what are points

the points are made up and the rules don't matter! however, each challenge will have a certain number of points to earn.
generally 50 words of fic/1 icons = 5 points. other things will be worth different points
each month, you can enter as many challenges as you like, as many times as you like, but individually, you can only earn 150 points maximum a month. After that you can continue to do challenges, but there won't be any more points added to your total. Points do not roll over, after the last day of each month your total will be returned to zero and the points you have earned will be "banked" in the hall of fame.

why only 150 points a month

I like to post a lot of challenges, i don't want you to feel stressed out about doing them all. hopefully there will be approximately 200-300 points worth of challenges post each month, and it means you can pick and choose what you want to do without getting overwhelmed or feel like you're letting your team down.

Yes, you can absolutely start creating things for the next month - just don't submit them in the current month if you've maxed out on points.

what is the oak tree?

its a community for you to post anything you make for this comm, or social activites with your fellow members. you're free to join and leave that comm at any time.

do i have to sign up?

if you want to be on a team, yes. if you want to have your points counted, yes. however there is nothing stopping you from watching the comm and doing the challenges even without being a member.

what are sig banners?

a signature banner, or sig banner is a banner you use when submitting your challenges to say what team you are on. they are optional, but pretty :D please ensure they aren't too big - no more than 300px in width and 150px in height so challenge posts don't get overloaded with images. you can make them yourself, have people make them for you, whatever you like! it helps me know what team/nest you are on, so while they are optional, i'm grateful when you use them.

please don't hesitate to ask here at this post, or via pm to me. :D COMMENTS OF THIS POST ARE INITIALLY SCREENED.

lots of this has been copied from various land comms i ran on lj, [livejournal.com profile] theiconquest and some other land comms ran by other people.

So say a challenge lets me link to a post (an icon post, for example), does that post have to be on DW or can I link to something on LJ?

Ooh, I have a question! When I write a fic for one of these challenges, does it have to be for one of these challenges only? Or can I combine it with another challenge? Like, I'm completing a "100 situations" kind of dealy for The Baby-sitters Club at [community profile] babysitters100 - if I write a fic that fits both the criteria for that challenge, and a challenge here (like the "5 things challenge"), can I use it for both? Can I use a [community profile] fandom_stocking fic as part of [community profile] theaviary's challenges? Or should my fics for [community profile] theaviary only ever be for [community profile] theaviary? I just want clarification before I start anything :)
